Tigers avoid arbitration with closer Greene

Detroit Tigers closer Shane Greene agreed to a one-year contract worth $4 million late Thursday night, avoiding arbitration less than 24 hours before the deadline for teams and players to exchange salary figures.

Greene, 30, posted a 4-6 record with a 5.12 ERA and 32 saves last season while earning $1.95 million. The right-hander had 65 strikeouts in 63 1/3 innings over 66 appearances in his first season as a closer.

In five seasons in the majors, Greene has a 22-25 record with a 4.89 ERA. He started out his career primarily as a starter, going 5-4 with a 3.78 ERA in 15 appearances (14 starts) with the New York Yankees in 2014. He struggled with the Tigers in 2015, compiling a 4-8 record and 6.88 ERA in 18 games (16 starts).

Greene made the moved primarily to the bullpen in 2016. Used exclusively as a reliever with the Tigers the past two seasons, he totaled 41 saves in 51 chances while making 137 appearances.

The Tigers still have five arbitration-eligible players remaining: right fielder Nicholas Castellanos, right-hander Michael Fulmer, and lefties Matthew Boyd, Blaine Hardy and Daniel Norris.
